Pruning That Leaves the Tree Stronger
Tree trimming and pruning done well is mostly about restraint. The goal is to remove the wood that is dead, rubbing, too heavy or in the way, and leave the rest of the crown to feed the tree. In Cleveland the usual reasons are limbs over a roof or garage, branches scraping the side of a double, a low canopy over the driveway, dead wood hanging over the sidewalk, and long horizontal limbs that are likely to load up with lake-effect snow.
What good pruning looks like
The industry standard for tree pruning in the United States is ANSI A300. In practical terms it means cutting just outside the branch collar instead of flush to the trunk or leaving a stub, shortening a limb back to a side branch big enough to take over, and not stripping the inside of the crown so only tufts are left at the ends. Topping, which means cutting the main stems back to stubs, is the opposite: it produces weak, fast sprouts and decay. The City of Cleveland bans topping on its own trees, and its permit rules require public pruning to follow A300.
Getting ready for snow and storms
Hopkins averages about 64 inches of snow a year and much more falls in the East Side Snow Belt. Wet snow and ice are hardest on silver maples, Bradford pears and other trees with long limbs and tight V-shaped forks. Reduction cuts that shorten the heaviest ends, and thinning that lets wind pass through, lower the load before winter. Thinning the crown is also the usual first step before cabling a weak fork.
Timing around oak wilt
The Ohio Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture says oak sap beetles that spread oak wilt are active from early March to late July, peaking April through July, and calls November through February the safest time to prune oaks in Ohio. We schedule oak pruning in the dormant season unless a limb is broken or dangerous; in that case the wound is painted promptly to keep beetles off it. Most other trees can be pruned in late winter as well, when the branch structure is easy to see.
Wires and the tree lawn
Limbs touching a power line are for FirstEnergy's Illuminating Company or Cleveland Public Power, whichever serves your street. Trees in the tree lawn belong to the City's public tree program and need an Urban Forestry permit for pruning. We prune trees on your property and tell you when a limb is someone else's to handle.
Common Jobs
Pruning work is matched to what the tree and the property actually need.
Crown cleaning
Removing dead, dying, broken and crossing branches throughout the canopy.
Roof and siding clearance
Shortening limbs that scrape shingles, gutters and siding or drop debris into the gutters.
Crown raising
Lifting low limbs over driveways, walks, sidewalks and patios for clearance underneath.
Reduction and thinning
Taking weight off long, heavy limbs ahead of snow and storm season without topping.
Dormant-season oak pruning
Oak work scheduled November through February to lower oak wilt risk.
Young tree structural pruning
Choosing one main leader and good scaffold branches early so the tree does not grow a weak fork.

Step by Step
1. Look at the crown
We point out dead wood, weak forks, rubbing limbs and anything touching the house or wires.
2. Agree on the cuts
The quote says what comes off and why, in plain terms, along with the timing.
3. Prune
Cuts are made at the branch collar or back to a side branch, with heavy pieces roped down.
4. Leave it tidy
Brush chipped, small wood hauled or stacked, and gutters checked for fallen twigs.

Why Choose Us for Tree Trimming & Pruning
No topping
We reduce trees back to side branches rather than cutting stubs.
Oak timing
Non-urgent oak pruning waits for the dormant season.
Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How often should trees be trimmed?
For most mature yard trees, every three to five years is a reasonable check, sooner for fast growers like silver maple or trees close to the house. Young trees benefit from light structural pruning every year or two. A crown that drops dead wood after every storm should not wait.
Why shouldn't a tree be topped?
Topping leaves big stubs that decay and pushes out clusters of fast, weakly attached sprouts that break more easily in snow and wind. It also starves the tree by removing much of its leaf area at once. Cleveland does not allow topping on City trees.
Can you trim the branches hanging over from my neighbor's tree?
Generally a homeowner may cut limbs back to the property line, but not in a way that kills or seriously harms the neighbor's tree. It is wise to talk with the neighbor first, and we cut back to proper side branches rather than leaving a flat wall at the line.
When is the safest time to prune oaks in Cleveland?
November through February, according to the Ohio Chapter ISA, because the beetles that spread oak wilt are inactive then. April through July is the highest-risk window.
Will the utility trim my trees for free?
The utility trims to keep its own lines clear, on its own schedule and with its own goals, which usually means directional cuts away from the wires. It will not shape the rest of your tree. FirstEnergy has an online form to report a tree problem near its lines.
