Finding Out What Is Wrong With a Tree

Tree health assessments start with a simple question from the homeowner: is this tree okay? Thin leaves, dead branches at the top, odd spots on the leaves, mushrooms at the base, sap oozing from the trunk or a lean that seems new are all reasons to have someone look. Northeast Ohio has a few tree problems that are worse here than almost anywhere in the country, so the answer in Cleveland often depends on recognizing them early.

Beech leaf disease

Beech leaf disease was first discovered in 2012 in Lake County, just east of Cleveland. Ohio State University Extension reports it in 25 Ohio counties and in several northeastern states. Look up at the leaves in spring and summer: dark green bands between the side veins, sometimes with crinkled, leathery leaves. Over time buds abort, leaves drop early and the crown thins. Extension says trees of all ages can die within two to seven years, with smaller trees often hit harder. Research into treatment is ongoing, so an assessment here is mostly about how far along the tree is and how close it stands to the house.

Oak wilt

The U.S. Forest Service's Ohio report says oak wilt has been in the state since at least 1950 but has been found in more places since 2019. It moves overland on sap beetles that visit fresh wounds and underground through grafted roots between neighboring oaks. Symptoms such as leaves wilting and browning from the top down can look like other oak problems, which is why the Ohio Chapter ISA recommends having a Certified Arborist confirm it and send samples for lab testing when needed.

Emerald ash borer

Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 88 Ohio counties since 2016. Signs include woodpecker damage that leaves pale patches on the bark, thinning at the top of the crown, D-shaped exit holes and sprouts along the trunk. By now most untreated ash in Cuyahoga County are dead or declining, so the question is usually whether the tree is still safe to climb and how soon it should come down.

Spotted lanternfly and tree of heaven

Cuyahoga County is in the Ohio Department of Agriculture's spotted lanternfly quarantine. Tree of heaven, the insect's main host, is common along Cleveland rail lines, alleys and vacant lots and often seeds into fence lines and backyards. We can identify tree of heaven, look for egg masses in fall and winter, and explain what moving firewood or nursery stock out of the quarantine area involves.

Decay and structure

Many health questions turn out to be structural. Fungal conks on the trunk, a hollow sound when the trunk is tapped, cracks below a fork and a soil mound on one side of a leaning tree all point to a tree that may fail. Those trees get an honest answer: keep and prune, cable, watch it, or remove.

Tree Health Assessments Questions

Can beech leaf disease be treated?

Researchers in Ohio and other states are still studying how it spreads and how to manage it, and Ohio State Extension asks people to report suspected cases to the county Extension office or ODNR Division of Forestry. For a valuable beech, ask about current treatment trials, and plan ahead if it stands over the house.

Should I treat my ash tree or cut it down?

Treatment can protect an ash that is still healthy, but it has to continue for the life of the tree. Once a large share of the crown is dead, removal is usually the safer choice, and it gets riskier the longer a dead ash stands.

How do I know if my oak has oak wilt?

Leaves that wilt and brown from the top of the tree down in summer, especially on red oak species, are a warning sign, but other problems look similar. The Ohio Chapter ISA recommends confirmation by a Certified Arborist and lab testing when in doubt.

What should I do if I see a spotted lanternfly?

Cuyahoga County is already under the Ohio Department of Agriculture's quarantine, and ODA tracks sightings. Destroy the insects and egg masses you can reach, and check vehicles and firewood before moving them out of the area.
