Neighborhoods Between the Highways

Tree Service in Independence serves a small city with an unusual layout. Independence has only 7,584 residents (2020 Census) and 3,069 housing units on about 9.5 square miles, and a large share of its land goes to the I-77 and I-480 interchange and the office and hotel corridor along Rockside Road. The residential neighborhoods sit around those corridors, with roomier lots than most inner suburbs and plenty of mature trees. Originally called Center, the town was renamed Independence in 1830, and the 1939 cloverleaf at Granger and Brecksville roads is still in use.

A city that plans for its trees

Independence City Council established a Tree Commission in 1993. The commission studies and advises on the care, planting and removal of trees and shrubs, and it maintains a written yearly plan for the care, preservation, pruning, planting, replanting and removal of trees in parks, streets and other public areas, which Council approves. It also advises property owners on protecting healthy trees, choosing native and suitable species, regular pruning and tree risk assessment. The city has a staff arborist who takes questions on public trees. If your concern is a tree on public land or in the right-of-way, start there.

Yard waste and chipper service

The Service Department runs yard waste pickup on your rubbish day from the first full week of April (April 6 in 2026) through the second week of December. Yard waste has to be in paper bags or open containers, each no more than 50 pounds. The department also runs a chipper service and delivers compost from the yard waste program free to residents. For homeowners doing their own light pruning, those services cover a lot. A full removal produces far more material than bags can handle, so on our jobs the brush is chipped and the wood hauled away unless you want it left.

Trees near busy roads

Many Independence homes sit near major roads, and trees along them take salt spray in winter, soil compaction and root damage from road and utility work. Those stresses add up: thinning crowns, dead branches at the top, early fall color and bark cracks are common signs. Some stressed trees recover with deadwood pruning and mulch over the root zone; others are too far gone and should come down before they drop limbs over a driveway or sidewalk.

What we do in Independence

Tree removal: sectional takedowns near houses and straight felling where lots allow. Pruning: deadwood removal, crown thinning and reduction, clearance over roofs and drives. Stump grinding: below grade, with chips raked or left as mulch. Storm work: limbs on roofs, split trees, uprooted trees after summer storms or heavy snow. Assessments: a walk-around of the trees you are worried about, with a plain answer on whether they can stay.

Independence Questions

Who decides about the trees along my street?

Independence's Tree Commission prepares a yearly plan for public trees that Council approves, and the city arborist handles questions about them. Private trees in your yard are yours to manage.

Will the city take the brush from my tree removal?

Yard waste pickup takes paper bags and open containers up to 50 pounds, and the city runs a chipper service. A full removal usually produces more than that, which is why our estimates include chipping and hauling.

The trees by the road look worse every year. Why?

Road salt, compacted soil and root damage from road or utility work all stress trees. Mulching the root zone and removing deadwood can help, but trees with major dieback often need to be removed.

Can you look at a tree and just tell me if it's safe?

Yes. We do walk-around assessments and explain what we see, including when the answer is that the tree is fine.
