Solon's Land Shapes Its Trees
Tree Service in Solon starts with the ground. When settlers from Connecticut arrived in 1820, drainage and wetland problems made farming hard, and it took years before Solon became a dairy town with five cheese factories. Those wet, slow-draining soils are still here under many lawns and wooded lots. Trees in wet ground tend to root shallowly, and a shallow-rooted tree is more likely to tip over in a windstorm after days of rain than to snap. When we look at a Solon tree, we check the root plate and soil as closely as the crown.
A planned city with a lot of green
Solon was one of the first cities to adopt a comprehensive zoning plan, which kept its large industrial base, including about 10,700 manufacturing jobs, separate from neighborhoods. The result is residential areas with room: about 20 square miles of land for 24,262 residents (2020 Census) and 9,079 housing units. The city counts 687 acres of city parks and recreation land and three golf courses, and about 360 acres of Cleveland Metroparks' South Chagrin Reservation fall inside its borders. Many homes back up to woods, and many lots still have trees that were there before the houses.
Common Solon projects
Hazard trees at the woods' edge. Builders often leave a strip of existing trees behind new homes. Those trees lost roots during grading and now stand exposed. Years later they start dying back from the top or leaning. We remove them before they fall on a deck or fence, and we leave the healthy ones that still have a full crown and sound roots.
Dead ash in back woods. Emerald ash borer killed most untreated ash in northeast Ohio. In a wooded lot, the dead ones are easy to miss until a limb lands on something.
Crown raising over lawns and drives. Low limbs from oaks and maples shade out grass and scrape vehicles. Removing select lower limbs, done correctly, keeps the tree healthy.
Stumps from old clearing. Big stumps left from construction or earlier removals can be ground out to reclaim the yard.
Storm cleanup. Wind and heavy snow both bring down limbs, and a saturated root plate can let an entire tree go.
Working near the reservation
If your lot borders South Chagrin Reservation or other public land, we only work on trees that are clearly on your property. When the line is unclear, a survey stake or plat map settles it before we cut.
Access and equipment
Solon's larger lots often let us bring equipment closer to the tree, which can make removals faster. Soft ground cuts the other way: in wet spring weather, heavy machines can rut a lawn. We plan the route in, use ground protection when needed, and will reschedule rather than tear up a soaked yard.
Wet ground also affects stump grinding. A ground-out stump in low, soggy soil leaves a pocket of chips and loose earth that settles as it rots, so we rake the chips out, fill with topsoil and tell you to expect some settling the first year.

Solon Questions
Why do trees in my yard fall over roots and all?
In wet, slow-draining soil, trees often keep their roots shallow. After heavy rain, the soil loses its grip and wind can tip the whole root plate. Watch for soil cracking or lifting on one side of the trunk.
The builder left a strip of woods behind my house. Should I worry?
Trees at a cleared edge often lose roots during grading and face new wind exposure. Many decline over the following years. An inspection can sort out which ones to keep and which to take out.
Can you work when the yard is soft?
Sometimes, with ground mats and lighter equipment. If the lawn is saturated and the job is not urgent, waiting a week usually saves the yard.
My lot backs up to South Chagrin Reservation. Can you cut trees on the line?
Only trees on your property. If the line is unclear, we ask for a survey or plat before cutting.
