The Beeches Came First
Tree Service in Beachwood has a fitting backdrop: the city was named for the many beech trees that grew throughout the village, and it was first spelled Beechwood. Residents of what was then part of Warrensville Township broke away and incorporated as a village on June 26, 1915, after the township voted to close a nearby school. Beachwood became a city in 1960. Most of the beeches that gave it the name are long gone, but the city still has mature trees on nearly every residential street.
When the houses went up
Beachwood stayed tiny for decades: 249 people in 1930 and 1,073 in 1950. Then it grew to 6,089 by 1960 and 9,631 by 1970, as postwar families moved east and several synagogues relocated to the city starting in the late 1950s. The 2020 Census counted 14,040 residents in 6,425 housing units, with about 53 percent owner-occupied and the rest rentals, reflecting the city's many apartments and condominiums. For single-family owners, that history means most yard trees are 50 to 70 years old, planted with the houses or left from the woods the houses replaced.
Brush pickup, Beachwood style
Beachwood's Public Works Department offers one brush pickup per week, and its rules are specific:
- Put brush on the tree lawn after 6:00 PM the evening before your rubbish day.
- Keep branches to 6 feet long or less.
- Cut logs to 3 feet or less and 35 pounds or less.
- Keep logs and brush in separate piles, stacked parallel to the street.
- Leave a few feet of clearance from hydrants, mailboxes, trees and poles.
- No tarps, and no grass, compost, garbage or building materials mixed in.
If you would like to use the city pickup to save on hauling, we can cut and stack to those rules. For a large removal, we usually haul everything so you are not waiting weeks for piles to clear.
A higher, colder spot
Beachwood's elevation is about 1,214 feet, among the higher ground on Cleveland's east side, and that means more exposure to winter snow and wind than neighborhoods down by the lake. Heavy wet snow on broad-leaved trees in an early storm, before leaves drop, is a classic way to lose big limbs. Pruning out weak forks and long, heavy limbs ahead of winter reduces that risk.
Services we offer in Beachwood
Pruning: deadwood removal, crown thinning, raising limbs over drives and walks, and clearance from roofs. Removal: sectional takedowns near houses and garages, and straight felling where there is room. Stump grinding: below grade, with chips raked out and the hole backfilled on request. Storm work: limbs on roofs or cars, split trunks, uprooted trees.

Beachwood Questions
Can I put the branches from my tree job out for the city?
Yes, within Beachwood's rules: once a week, set out after 6 PM the night before rubbish day, branches 6 feet or shorter, logs 3 feet and 35 pounds or less, in separate piles. We can cut to those sizes if you want to use the pickup.
Should I prune before winter?
If a tree has long, heavy limbs over the house or weak V-shaped forks, late fall or winter pruning is a good time. The tree is dormant, and the limbs carry less weight into snow season.
I live in a condo. Can I hire you for a tree on the property?
Usually the association decides on tree work on common ground. Ask the board or manager to contact us, and we will give them a written estimate.
Can you grind a stump next to the driveway?
Yes. Grinders can work close to concrete. We note any roots that run under the slab, since those are left in place to avoid undermining it.
