Lorain County's Lakeshore City

Tree Service in Avon Lake covers a city that started out clearing trees, not saving them. Early settlers here cleared land, sawed timber and built ships, and sawmills and shipyards once lined the Lake Erie shore. Today Avon Lake sits about 17 miles west of downtown Cleveland in Lorain County, with 25,206 residents (2020 Census) on about 11 square miles, and it has been a qualified Tree City USA since 1993. Its housing ranges from older homes near the water to subdivisions built in recent decades.

Two kinds of yards

Near the lake: Older homes, mature trees and wind straight off Lake Erie. These trees tend to be large, with heavy limbs and decades of storm wear. Most of our work here is maintenance pruning, deadwood removal and occasional removal of trees that have declined.

In newer subdivisions: Younger trees, often a single species planted down a whole street. The common problems are ornamental pears splitting at narrow forks, maples planted too close to driveways, and spruce rows that have outgrown their spot. Young trees respond well to early structural pruning, which is far cheaper than fixing a bad fork after it breaks.

Parks and green space

Avon Lake has about 220 acres of parks and playgrounds, including six community parks: Bleser, Miller Road, Veterans Memorial, Weiss Field, Walker Road and Bicentennial. Neighborhood parks such as Belle Road, Inwood, Overlook, Resatar and Sunset connect to bike trails. If a park tree is the issue, that is the city's to handle. The city's Public Works department posts notices when it starts street tree pruning; a recent round was announced to begin the week of February 23.

Owners and lots

About 80 percent of occupied homes in Avon Lake are owner-occupied, and the city has 10,705 housing units. Most lots have room for a chipper in the driveway and a clear route to the backyard, which keeps removals straightforward. Fences, sheds and pools are the obstacles we plan around most often.

Wind off the lake

Avon Lake sits on Lake Erie's south shore, and the city gets the same mix of weather as the rest of the south shore: strong west and northwest winds in fall storms, lake-effect snow in early winter, and summer thunderstorms that can knock down limbs in minutes. Trees that grew up sheltered in the middle of a subdivision can be caught out when a new house, a removal next door or a cleared lot opens them to that wind. If a big tree near your house has recently become exposed on one side, it is worth having the crown checked for weak forks and deadwood before winter.

Avon Lake Questions

My young maple has two trunks. Should I do something now?

Yes, ideally. Two equal stems from a narrow fork tend to split as the tree grows. Shortening one while the tree is young lets the other become the main trunk. It is a small job now and a big one later.

Does the city prune the trees along my street?

Avon Lake's Public Works department does street tree pruning and posts its schedule. For trees in your yard, the work is yours to arrange.

Can you remove a tree next to my pool?

Yes. We lower pieces on ropes so nothing lands in the pool or on the deck, and we cover the water's edge to catch small debris.

Are lakeshore trees more likely to fail?

They take more wind, but many are well adapted to it. The risk rises when there is decay, root damage or new exposure after nearby trees come down.
