After the Storm, Before the Next One

Tree Service in Euclid got a lot of attention after the storm on the night of November 21, 2024. Trees and branches came down across streets, driveways and sidewalks, and the city's message the next morning was blunt: crews would only clear debris from trees on city property, meaning the treelawn trees, and homeowners were responsible for trees and branches that fell on private property. Those are the jobs we handle in Euclid: limbs on roofs and garages, trees split at the fork, and the cleanup that follows.

A city with a big tree backlog

Euclid has been open about the state of its public trees. In announcing a $50,000 grant from Cuyahoga County's Healthy Urban Tree Canopy program, administered by the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District, the city said roughly 8,000 trees citywide need pruning or removal. The grant pays to prune about 300 large trees, those 24 inches in diameter and up, on top of more than $200,000 the city put into its urban forest in 2025. In December 2025 the city began removing about 170 tree lawn trees under its Citywide Street Tree Removal Program, with stumps scheduled to be ground and lawns restored in spring 2026.

For homeowners, the takeaway is that many neighborhoods have aging trees on both sides of the sidewalk. The city is working on the public ones. The private trees behind them are often the same age and species, with the same problems.

Lakefront wind

Euclid has a beachfront area along its north edge on Lake Erie. Wind off the lake hits trees closest to the shore first, and those trees often develop a lean or a lopsided crown away from the water. A tree that has been shaped by wind for decades can be stable, but one that has also lost roots to construction or has decay at the base is a different story. We look at both before calling a lakefront tree safe or not.

Euclid Creek

Part of Cleveland Metroparks' Euclid Creek Reservation lies in Euclid, and homes near the creek valley deal with steeper yards and wetter soil. Removing a tree at the top of a slope takes planning: pieces have to be lowered rather than dropped, and we avoid leaving bare, disturbed soil that can wash out.

What a storm visit looks like

1. Safety first: we check for wires, which are the utility's job, and for anything resting on the house. 2. We take weight off the structure with controlled cuts and lower it. 3. Broken stubs are pruned back to clean cuts so the tree can seal over, or we recommend removal if the trunk or main fork is split. 4. Brush and wood are hauled, and you get a written record of the work for your insurer if you need one.

Older lots, mixed history

Euclid Village was incorporated in 1903 and became a city in 1930, and the city is known nationally for the 1926 Supreme Court case Village of Euclid v. Ambler Realty, which opened the door to municipal zoning across the United States. The 2020 Census counted 49,692 residents and 26,107 housing units. Housing ranges from early-1900s homes near the lake to postwar subdivisions, so the trees we see range just as widely.

Euclid Questions

A tree from my yard fell during a storm. Will the city haul it?

Not if it came down on private property. Euclid's storm guidance says city crews clear only debris from city treelawn trees, and homeowners handle the rest. We can cut it up and haul it away.

The city marked the tree lawn tree in front of my house for removal. Who grinds the stump?

Under the 2025 program, the city's contractor returns to grind stumps and restore the lawn, likely in spring 2026. Questions go to the city's Urban Forester at (216) 289-8141.

My tree near the lake leans away from the water. Is that dangerous?

Not necessarily. Many lakefront trees lean from decades of wind and are well rooted. A new lean, cracked soil on one side, or decay at the base are the warning signs.

Can you give me paperwork for an insurance claim after storm damage?

Yes. Our written estimate and invoice describe the tree, the damage and the work done, which is what most insurers ask for.
