High Ground, Bigger Lots

Tree Service in North Royalton takes place on high ground at the south edge of Cuyahoga County. The city's elevation is about 1,198 feet, and it spreads over 21.4 square miles of land, with 31,322 residents and 14,125 housing units in 2020. That is a lot of space per home by Cleveland-area standards, and many lots still have stands of trees, wooded back acres and old fencerow trees left from the farm days. High, open ground also means trees take more wind than they would in a sheltered valley.

What the city will and won't pick up

North Royalton collects yard waste weekly on your service day. Small branches have to be cut to 4-foot lengths and bundled under 50 pounds, and bagged waste must also stay under 50 pounds. The city's list of what it will not take is the important part for tree work: stumps, root balls, and wood from tree removals are excluded, along with excessive material from big landscaping projects. Large amounts have to go to a compost or yard waste facility, which the city points to through Cuyahoga Recycles. In practice, if you have a tree taken down, the wood has to leave with the crew or go to a facility. Our estimates spell out which.

The city's street tree list

North Royalton publishes a Recommended Street Tree List that is useful for any homeowner choosing a tree:

  • Small trees (20-30 ft) for 4-6 foot tree lawns, spaced 25-35 feet apart: serviceberry, eastern redbud, Japanese tree lilac, hop hornbeam and others.
  • Medium trees (25-50 ft) for 6-8 foot tree lawns: Freeman and sugar maple, black tupelo, shingle oak, lacebark elm.
  • Large trees (over 50 ft) for tree lawns over 8 feet: bur oak, northern red oak, hackberry, tulip tree, linden, London planetree.

The list bans Norway maple, tree of heaven, Callery pear and Siberian elm as invasive, ash because of emerald ash borer, and silver maple, birch, sweetgum, sycamore, poplar and willow for roots that spread too far. If one of those is already in your yard and causing trouble, you are in good company.

From township to city

Knight Sprague, an early settler, named the township after Royalton, Vermont; the area was founded in 1818 and renamed North Royalton between 1880 and 1890 because another Ohio town had the same name. It became a village on April 4, 1927, and a city in 1961. Growth peaked in the 1950s and 60s, with population up 135.8 percent between 1950 and 1960, so many neighborhoods and their trees date from that period. The 1833 John M. Annis House on State Road is one of the few buildings older than that.

Tree Removal in Cleveland, OH

North Royalton Questions

Can I put the wood from my tree removal out with yard waste?

No. North Royalton specifically excludes stumps, root balls and wood from tree removals from pickup. It has to be hauled or taken to a facility, which is why our removal quotes list hauling separately.

What tree should I plant to replace the one I removed?

The city's street tree list is a good starting point. Match the tree's mature size to the space: a small tree like serviceberry or redbud for tight spots, an oak or linden where there is room to grow.

Is silver maple really that bad?

It grows fast and gives shade quickly, but the wood is weak and the roots spread far. North Royalton keeps it off its street tree list for that reason. Many backyard silver maples are fine with regular pruning.

Can you clear dead trees out of my back woods?

Yes. On wooded lots we can fell dead trees and leave the wood in the woods to decay if you prefer, or cut and haul it.
