Little Room, Big Trees

Tree Service in University Heights means working in close quarters. The city covers only about 1.8 square miles, all land, yet the 2020 Census counted 13,914 residents and 5,266 housing units, so lots are narrow and houses close together. Many streets have big, older trees that shade two or three yards at once. When one of those needs to come down, there is rarely room to drop it, and the work is done in pieces: climbing, rigging and lowering each limb and section of trunk.

Contractors haul their own debris

University Heights is direct about this: if you are having tree work done by a contractor, the contractor is responsible for removing the brush and logs. City yard waste pickup is meant for homeowner-generated waste: grass and leaves in kraft bags under 50 pounds on the tree lawn, brush bundled no longer than four feet, and logs cut to two-foot lengths under 50 pounds. Excess amounts count as a special pickup. On our jobs, everything leaves with us, and the estimate states that so you do not have to wonder.

From Idlewood Village to University Heights

The city started as Idlewood Village, incorporated in 1908 after being part of Warrensville Township. It took its current name in the mid-1920s, when John Carroll University was expected to move into the area. John Carroll is now a private Jesuit university with about 3,500 students. Both branches of Dugway Brook rise on or near its campus, and within city limits the brook was put into culverts in the early 20th century. So while you will not see much running water, some of the ground under the neighborhoods was once stream valley, and drainage varies street to street.

What we see most

Deadwood over roofs and driveways. Older trees on small lots shed dead branches onto houses, cars and neighbors' yards. Cleaning out deadwood every few years is the single most useful thing an owner can do.

Limbs on service lines. Branches rubbing on the wires to your house should be handled by the utility or by a crew qualified for line clearance. We will tell you which applies.

Removals between houses. Sectional removal with rigging, lowering pieces to the ground in a small drop zone or into a driveway.

Stumps. Grinding below grade so the space can be planted or paved.

Christmas trees and tinsel

A small seasonal note: the city collects Christmas trees from the tree lawn and grinds them into mulch, so take off all tinsel first. It does not compost. The same goes for your own yard: if you want chips from our work left for mulch, tell us, and keep them a few inches back from trunks and siding.

University Heights Questions

Will the city pick up the logs from my tree removal?

No. University Heights makes the contractor responsible for removing brush and logs from tree work. Our estimates include it.

There's no room to drop my tree. Can it still be removed?

Yes. On tight lots we take trees down in sections, lowering limbs and trunk pieces on ropes into a small clear area or the driveway.

My neighbor's tree drops dead branches on my car. What can I do?

Talk to your neighbor first. You can generally have overhanging limbs pruned back to the property line, but deadwood is best removed from the whole tree, which takes the owner's agreement.

Is a shared driveway a problem for tree work?

Not usually, but your neighbor will need to keep it clear while we work, since that is often where pieces are lowered and the chipper is set up. A heads-up a few days ahead keeps things friendly.

Can I trim small branches myself and put them out?

Yes. Bundle brush no longer than four feet and cut logs into two-foot pieces under 50 pounds, and the city will pick them up.
