A Postwar Suburb Comes of Age

Tree Service in Fairview Park often comes down to age. The city's growth picked up after World War II, when the Fairview Shopping Center opened in 1947 and drew families out from Cleveland. Much of the housing on Fairview Park's streets dates from that wave, and so do many of the trees in their yards. The 2020 Census counted 17,291 residents and 8,197 housing units on about 4.7 square miles, a count that has barely moved since 2010. In a built-out suburb like this, the trees are mostly the ones that went in with the houses, and they are now old enough to need real attention.

How Fairview Park came together

The land was first part of Rockport Township, then the Rocky River hamlet. In 1910 the hamlet split, and the southern part took the name Goldwood, later incorporated as a village. By 1925 what remained of Goldwood had been renamed Parkview, which was annexed to Fairview in 1967. The patchwork shows in the streets: blocks laid out at different times, with different lot widths and tree patterns.

Signs a 70-year-old tree needs work

  • Dead branches in the top of the crown, especially over the roof
  • Mushrooms or conks at the base or on the trunk
  • Cracks or seams running down from a fork
  • Bark falling off in patches, or woodpecker damage on ash
  • Roots lifting the driveway or walk
  • A lean that is new or getting worse

Any one of these is a reason to have the tree looked at. Two or more usually means the tree needs either significant pruning or removal. Silver and Norway maples, common in postwar yards across the region, tend to show several at once as they age.

Yard waste rules

Fairview Park collects yard waste every week. Put it in plastic or paper bags or 32-gallon cans marked "Yard Waste," each 35 pounds or less. Sticks must be bundled and no longer than 4 feet, with any nails removed. Set out after 5 PM Sunday and by 6 AM Monday, and return containers by 6 PM Tuesday. That works for small pruning jobs. For removals, the volume and the logs are more than weekly pickup is set up for, so we chip and haul. Questions about city services go to the Service Department at 440-356-4410.

Tree Removal in Cleveland, OH

Fairview Park Questions

My tree is as old as my house. Does it need to come out?

Not because of age alone. Many 70-year-old trees have decades left with good pruning. We look for decay, cracks and dieback before recommending removal.

Can I put the branches from my tree job out on Monday?

Small amounts, yes: bundled sticks under 4 feet and bags or cans under 35 pounds. A full tree is more than weekly pickup is set up for, so it is usually hauled.

Roots are lifting my driveway. What are my options?

Sometimes roots can be cut at the edge of the drive without harming the tree, but cutting large roots close to the trunk can destabilize it. If the tree is the problem and the drive is being replaced, removal and grinding may make more sense.

What happens to the stump after a removal?

If your estimate includes grinding, we grind below grade, rake out the chips and leave the area level. Without grinding, we cut the stump low so it can be mowed over.

Can you give me a second opinion on a tree another company said to remove?

Yes. We will look at it and tell you honestly whether we agree.
