Tree-Lined Streets, Long-Time Owners

Tree Service in Bay Village usually means caring for trees people want to keep. Bay Village is known for tree-lined streets of Craftsman, Cape Cod, Tudor and Colonial homes, with larger houses along the lakeshore, and the city celebrates itself as a Tree City USA at its annual Arbor Day event. Nearly 92 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied (2020 Census), so many of our Bay Village clients have lived with the same trees for decades. They call because a favorite oak is dropping limbs, not because they want a bare yard.

Lake Erie and Huntington Reservation

The whole city sits on the southern shore of Lake Erie, and Cleveland Metroparks' Huntington Reservation lies within it, along with the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center and BAYarts. The reservation was once the summer estate of John Huntington, an early Standard Oil partner. Cahoon Memorial Park is another large green space: Ida Marie Cahoon, the last of her family, left the family home and 115 acres to the city in 1917. Those parks and the lakefront mean many Bay Village homes are near large stands of trees, with the wind exposure that comes with open water.

How we approach a keep-it tree

1. Look at the whole tree. Roots and root flare, trunk, main forks, crown. Fungus at the base or a hollow sound in the trunk changes the plan. 2. Remove the dead first. Deadwood is the most common thing to fall and is easy to take out. 3. Reduce, don't top. Long limbs over the roof can be shortened back to a side branch, which keeps the tree's shape and lowers the load. 4. Thin where it helps. Removing select interior limbs lets wind pass through rather than pushing on a solid wall of leaves. 5. Write it down. We list what we did so the next pruning, often three to five years later, starts from a record. Over a few cycles, that record shows whether a tree is holding steady or slowly declining, which makes the eventual keep-or-remove decision a lot easier.

When removal is the right call

Some trees cannot be saved: ash killed by emerald ash borer, trees with major trunk decay, or trees split at the main fork. Bay Village lots are generally a comfortable size, about 6,466 homes on 4.57 square miles of land, but houses, garages and neighbors' fences still sit close. We take most removals down in sections and lower limbs on ropes. Stumps are ground and chips raked out, and we can leave chips for your beds if you want them. If you plan to replant in the same spot, tell us, and we will grind deeper and clear more of the chip pile so the new tree goes into soil rather than rotting wood.

A little history

The land was part of Connecticut's Western Reserve until Ohio became a state in 1803, and early parcels went to Connecticut residents who had lost property in the Revolutionary War. Bay Village broke off from Dover Township in 1901, incorporated in 1903 and became a city on January 1, 1950. Its 2020 population was 16,163.

Bay Village Questions

How often should my big oak be pruned?

For a mature, healthy oak, every three to five years is common. Oaks are best pruned in the dormant season, which lowers the risk of oak wilt spread through fresh wounds.

Can you shorten limbs over my roof without making the tree look butchered?

Yes. Reduction cuts go back to a side branch at least a third the size of the limb removed, so the tree keeps a natural shape. Topping is what makes trees look butchered, and we do not do it.

Do you leave wood chips if I want them?

Yes. Tell us when we quote, and we will leave a pile where you want it.

Can you work near Huntington Reservation?

On your property, yes. We do not cut trees on reservation land; those are managed by Cleveland Metroparks.
